Steve Locke Continues to Baffle Oswego

Senior leads Brockport to an 11-0 win over the Lakers

Mike DeGregory collected four hits in the 11-0 win over Oswego Sunday afternoon

BOXSCORE

The last time that senior pitcher Steve Locke (Oxford, NY/Oxford) took the mound against Oswego, he threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in The College at Brockport Baseball history. On Saturday at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport, Locke once again shut Oswego down, pitching seven scoreless innings in an 11-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win to complete a three-game sweep of the series with the Lakers.

The Golden Eagles (17-7 Overall, 6-4 SUNYAC) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead by the third inning and never looked back, led by Locke's pitching and the second-highest hit total of the season for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport collected 16 hits during the game, led by junior Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville), who set career highs in hits (four) and RBIs (three) in the win.

The Golden Eagles started fast, as senior Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) singled up the middle in the bottom of the first scoring two runners and sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) singled to left center, scoring Keado.  DeGregory collected his first RBI of the game with an infield single toward third base, scoring junior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley).

Brockport continued its scoring in the second inning, as sophomore Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored off a single by Booth and Keado scored after senior Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) reached base on a fielder's choice.

The early lead was just what Locke needed as the senior moved quickly through the Oswego lineup.

“(Catcher) Mike Goldstein and I were on the same page all day, it was good to get back on track,” said Steve Locke after his best start of the season. “We are rolling, hopefully we can continue to build on our success.”

Locke struck out a season-high seven batters over seven innings, allowing two hits, no runs and walking one batter.  With the win, Locke improves his record to 2-1 on the season.

“The curveball was working from the start,” said Locke on his strategy against the Lakers hitters. “I opened with the curve, worked in the fastball, and just tried to keep the hitters off balance.”

In the sixth inning, Zimmerman collected his second RBI of the game with a single up the middle that scored Booth. Sophomore Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) hit a double to deep center, landing at the warning track and scoring Zimmerman and DeGregory hit his second infield single of the game, scoring Boronczyk to give Brockport an 8-0 lead.

The final three Golden Eagle runs came in the eighth inning with three straight hits.  Senior Brandon Wroblewski (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) led off the eighth with a pinch-hit double, followed by a single to left center by freshman Michael Moroni (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) and a Weakley singled, scoring Wroblewski. Moroni scored on a balk and Weakley scored as DeGregory collected his fourth hit and third RBI of the game with a double down the left field line.

Junior Anthony Siracusa (Auburn, NY/Auburn) closed out the game for Brockport, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing one hit.

Brockport heads to Fredonia Wednesday for a 1 p.m. game to complete the three-game series with the Blue Devils before returning home on April 17-18 for a three-game series with the Plattsburgh.
