Six different players have two goals as Brockport rolls, 17-3

Sarah Brown tied a season-high with seven points as Brockport routed Oswego 17-3.
BOXSCORE

Sophomore Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) tied her season-high with seven points while sophomore Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added four goals and an assist as The College at Brockport's women's lacrosse team picked up its fourth straight win, 17-3 over Oswego Saturday afternoon at Brockport Field.

The Golden Eagles (7-3 overall, 4-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference) held Oswego to their season-low for goals, and blanked the Lakers (5-4, 1-3) over the final 29 minutes, 41 seconds to win for the seventh time in eight games.

“The defense did amazing,” said Brown, whose seven points were one off her career-high. “They're a wall, nothing can get past them. Even in practice, we hate playing against our zone defense because it's so hard to get past them.”

Junior Dayna Piraino (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) scored two goals with two assists, and was one of six Golden Eagles with two-plus goals. Freshman Alyssa Scordo (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) and sophomore Stephanie Toomey (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) each had two goals with an assist while junior Karen Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) added two goals for Brockport, which outshot Oswego 22-5 in the first half, and 40-8 for the game.

“Offensively, I think we're finally clicking, even from yesterday's great effort against RIT,” Maguire said, referencing Brockport's 15-4 win over the Tigers Friday afternoon.

“We seemed to be clicking well and then today it was just that much better. We're all making cuts, we're seeing each other and hitting our passes, and the shots are going in. We have more than one person that can score. There are some teams that only have one or two scorers, but we have at least six to seven girls that can finish, and that's huge for us.”

Piraino started the scoring 4:18 in, and after Oswego tied it three and a half-minutes later, Brockport went on a 4-0 run. Brown scored twice while Scordo and Bianchi also had goals to put the Green and Gold up 5-1. Brown assisted on both Scordo's and Bianchi's goals during the spurt.

Oswego pulled within 5-2 on a goal 10:08 before halftime, but Toomey scored twice just 57 seconds apart, and Maguire added a goal off a feed from Brown with 6:53 remaining to put Brockport up 8-2.

It remained 8-2 through the end of the first half, and the Lakers clawed within 8-3 on a goal just 19 seconds into the second. But the Golden Eagles closed out the game scoring the final nine goals. Senior Amanda Massmann (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) started the scoring run with an unassisted goal 1:29 into the half, Piraino added a goal off a feed from Toomey and Maguire scored a man-up goal with 23:03 to play to put the Golden Eagles up 11-3.

Maguire pumped in three of her goals over the final 23 minutes, and upped her season total to 19 goals. Brown leads Brockport with 26 goals, 18 assists and 44 points while Piraino has 11 goals and 16 assists, Toomey has 18 goals and an assist and Bianchi has 14 goals and an assist.

“Now we're really starting to connect our shots and every player is a threat on offense, so it's really good for our team,” Brown said. “Hustling, going to the goal, that's my game. Winning feels great, so why not (put in the hard work). I love playing and I love these girls, we're a special team.”

Senior Cally Weddle (Homer, NY/Homer) finished the scoring with an even-strength goal with nine seconds remaining.

Senior Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville) made three saves for her seventh win. Brockport's stifling defense forced 25 turnovers and limited Oswego to just three second-half shots.

Brockport returns to action with a 4 p.m. home game Tuesday afternoon against Fredonia.
