Brockport Holds On for Halted Game Win

Golden Eagles clinch a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament

Corey Booth had a pair of hits as Brockport finished a halted game with Plattsburgh with a 7-4 win

Sophomore Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton), junior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) and senior Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) had two hits each and The College at Brockport Baseball team score d at least one run in each inning as the Golden Eagles held on for a 7-4 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game that strated on April 18 in Brockport and finished in Oneonta Friday afternoon.

The original game – the first of a scheduled doubleheader – started and lasted three innings before the game was halted due to unplayable field conditions with an April snow fall in Brockport. The two teams resumed the game in Oneonta completed it and the second game of the doubleheader was started and stopped after a half inning of play due to rain. The second game will be resumed Sunday at 3 pm in Oneonta.

The win clinched a spot in the SUNYAC post season tournament. With nine victories in conference play, the Golden Eagles can finish no worse that fourth place in the final regular-season SUNYAC standings. The tournament begins May 6 at the site of the first place team in the standings. The Golden Eagles won the SUNYAC tournament title last year to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In the completed game, Brockport (20-10 overall, 9-5 SUNYAC) added to its 4-0 lead it had built before the game was halted with a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings building a 7-0 lead. Plattsburgh (16-18, 8-9) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning before Brockport relief pitcher Justin McCarthy (Moheghan Lake, NY/Lakeland) ended the game to earn the save.

In the fourth, senior Tom McCormick (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) started the inning reaching base on a throwing error and advanced to second on the play. He moved to third with a sacrifice bunt by fellow senior Casey Job (Troy, NY/Troy) and scored as Coleman grounded out to deep shortstop.

In the fifth, Zimmerman led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) walked, both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Junior Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) lifted a one-out fly to right field for a sacrifice fly scoring Zimmerman.

In the sixth inning, Coleman hit a one-out single down the left field line, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Booth singled up the middle to score Coleman giving Brockport the 7-0 lead.

Starter Aaron Tilley (Troy, NY/Troy) cruised through the first six innings before getting into trouble in the seventh as Plattsburgh rallied for four runs in the inning before McCarthy entered the game and induced a ground out to end the game.
