Brockport Sweeps Oneonta on Diamond

Kyle Smith breaks the single season strikeout record set back in 1976

Kyle Smith set the school record for strikeouts in a season with seven against Oneonta Saturday

BOXSCORE 1        BOXSCORE 2

Senior Kyle Smith (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) struck out seven batters in seven innings allowing just two runs and earned his eighth win of the season as The College at Brockport Baseball team scored three times in the eighth inning for a 3-2 win over Oneonta in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Oneonta. The Golden Eagles added a 5-4 victory in game two of the doubleheader for the sweep of the Red Dragons.

Brockport (22-10 Overall, 11-5 SUNYAC) can clinch second place in the final regular-season SUYNAC standings with a victory over Oneonta (20-14, 11-6) or Plattsburgh Sunday as Brockport completes the three-game series with the Red Dragons at 11 am and will look to complete a suspended game against the Cardinals following the Oneonta game in the afternoon in Oneonta.

Smith allowed a hit in each of the first three innings but didn't allow a run until the sixth when the Red Dragons broke the scoreless tie with a two-out two-run home run to left field.

In the top of the eighth inning, Brockport rallied for three runs to take the lead. Mike Goldstein (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) singled to open the inning and after a fielder's choice play, Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) singled through the right side of the infield moving Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) to third. Designated hitter Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) followed with a single scoring Coleman and Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville, North) walked to load the bases.

After an Oneonta pitching change, Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) doubled to left field scoring Keado and Booth to give Brockport the 3-2 lead.

Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) and Goldstein had two hits each and Weakley led the way with two runs batted in. Smith struck out seven batters to improve his season total to 69 breaking one of the oldest school records passing Brian Meyr's record of 68 strikeouts in a single season set back in 1976. The seven K's also move him into fourth place on the all-time career strikeouts list with 122.

In game two, Brockport fell behind again allowing a single run in each of the first three innings but the Golden Eagles battle back with runs in the fourth and sixth innings to trim the lead. In the fourth, Tracy hit a two-out single with Booth on second as Booth came around to score due in part to an error.

The Golden Eagles scored in the sixth as Anthony Siracusa (Auburn, NY/Auburn) doubled with two outs scoring Weakley who had singled earlier in the inning.

In the seventh inning of the seven-inning game two of the doubleheader, Brockport pushed across three runs for a 5-3 lead. With two outs, Keado started the rally with a single. Booth followed with an infield single and Zimmerman walked to load the bases. A fielding error allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score and Tracy followed with a single to center field scoring another run.

Oneonta scored once in the bottom of the seventh but Siracusa who came on in relief in the fourth inning, pitched out of the jam with an infield fly and a fly out to right field.

Tracy added two hits in the nightcap while Booth contributed two hits and scored twice.
