Solid Pitching Fuels Baseball Sweep

Kyle Smith and Aaron Tilley's pitching gems lead to sweep of Oswego

Corey Booth drove in five runs during Brockport's doubleheader sweep of Oswego Saturday.
GAME ONE BOXSCORE            GAME TWO BOXSCORE

Strong starting pitching and some timely hitting helped The College at Brockport's baseball team sweep its doubleheader with State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Oswego Saturday afternoon at Brockport's Clark V. Whited Complex.

Senior Kyle Smith (Sanborn, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) ran his record to 5-1 after allowing only two runs on four hits over seven innings as Brockport won Game One 12-3. In Game Two, junior Aaron Tilley (Troy, NY/Troy) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a complete-game, two-hitter, striking out eight batters as the Golden Eagles (16-7 overall, 5-4 SUNYAC) blanked Oswego (10-9, 0-6 SUNYAC) 8-0.

Brockport ran its winning streak to four straight and has now won five of the last six games.

“I credit the defense and the hitters,” said Tilley, who had the most strikeouts in his brief Brockport career. “This was a total team effort and that's the way it needs to be for us to be successful. Everyone played really well today and I hope we can keep it going. We know we can play this well all the time but we just need to put it all together.”

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the third in Game One, sophomore Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) singled and stole second. Senior Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) was intentionally walked, then stole second, and Coleman stole third then scored on a throwing error on Keado's steal attempt.

Junior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) made it 2-0 on an RBI double to left-center field, and sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) extended the lead to 3-0 on an RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Brockport tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Junior Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) hit a leadoff triple and scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Booth, who had three RBI through his first 16 games with the Green and Gold, matched that total with one swing. Booth sent a bases-clearing double into left field to give Brockport an 8-2 lead.

Brockport would add a run in the fifth on senior Tom McCormick's (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) RBI single, and got two more in the sixth. With the bases once again loaded and only one out, Weakley hit a two-run single through the left side of the infield as Brockport led 11-2.

Coleman finished Game One 3-for-3 while Booth was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Weakley went 2-for-4 with three RBI while sophomore Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Brockport, which rapped out 13 hits.

Smith finished with six strikeouts and only issued one walk. His season-long ERA is now 1.70 and he has 45 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings.

The Golden Eagles struck quickly in Game Two, pushing across four first-inning runs and adding four more in the fifth. Coleman, Keado and Booth all had RBI singles during the fifth as Brockport seized control with an 8-0 lead. All four runs were scored with two outs in the inning.

That was more than enough for Tilley, who retired the first 15 hitters in Game Two before the no-hitter was broken up with a leadoff double to start the sixth. With runners at first and third, Tilley got a strikeout for the first out of the inning. A wild pitch gave Oswego runners at second and third with just one out, and the Lakers had the bases loaded following an infield single. But Tilley induced a fly out and got a fielder's choice to get out of the inning with Brockport ahead 8-0.

Booth went 3-for-4, Keado was 2-for-4 and senior Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) drove in two runs during the Game Two rout.

“We had some big two-out hits again today,” said Justin Beach, Brockport's fourth-year head coach.

“(Jake) Coleman had a big two-out hit in the fifth inning (of Game Two) and it gave us the extra runs we needed to seal the victory. We played good defense, got great pitching and timely hitting. … we are going to win a lot of fames if we put all those things together.”

The Golden Eagles will wrap-up their seven-game homestand with a noon game against Oswego Sunday afternoon.
