ONEONTA GAME PLATTSBURGH GAME
The College at Brockport Baseball team capped a long weekend with two wins as the Golden Eagles defeated Oneonta 6-5 in 14 innings to complete a three-game sweep of the Red Dragon and then completed a nine-inning game against Plattsburgh with a 2-1 victory to complete that three-game State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series on Sunday afternoon in Oneonta.
The 14-inning game is the longest game since a 14-inning game with Rochester in 2005. The Yellowjackets won that game 4-3.
The 2-1 victory over Plattsburgh completed a crazy three-game series with the Cardinals. The series started on April 17 as the Golden Eagles won a 6-2 decision on a cold and very windy Sunday. The teams planned to play a doubleheader the following day to complete the series but an unexpected snow storm halted the first game in the fourth inning. That game was resumed and completed Friday afternoon with Brockport winning a 7-4 decision in Oneonta with plans to complete the series with another game immediately following. Those hopes were dashed by a steady rain in Oneonta and the series was then completed Sunday afternoon in Oneonta as the Golden Eagles posted the 2-1 victory.
Brockport (24-10 overall, 13-10 SUNYAC) clinched second place in the final regular-season standings and advanced to the SUNYAC Tournament that begins Friday in Cortland.
The Golden Eagles had three different leads against Oneonta but had to battle back for a run in the top of the 14th inning and hold on in the bottom of the 14th frame for the win.
Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) hit a one-out single up the middle in the 14th and
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) followed with a shot off the end of the third baseman's glove that continued on into left field for a single. With two outs in the inning,
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) sent a base hit through the left side of the infield scoring Keado to give Brockport the 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Red Dragons put one runner on base with a hit and after a failed sacrifice bunt ended in a pop up to the pitcher, the runner advanced to second with a stolen base. A groundout moved the potential tying run to third base and after a walk put runners on the corners, a strikeout ended the inning and the extended game.
Against Plattsburgh, starter
Steve Locke (Oxford, NY/Oxford) cruised through the first six innings allowing just one hit and keeping the Cardinals off the scoreboard. Brockport had taken a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning.
With one out,
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) doubled and one batter later,
Zach Prentice (Auburn, NY/Auburn) hit a triple to right field to score Tracy and break the scoreless tie. McCormick followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Prentice and secure a 2-0 lead for the Golden Eagles.
In the seventh, Plattsburgh scored its only run of the game on a throwing error.
Locke completed the complete-game victory on the mound and finished with five strikeouts. Keado led the offense with a pair of hits.
