The College at Brockport women's tennis team recorded its first win of the season at home on Saturday against Alfred University, with a score of 8-1.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) swept all three doubles matches against the Saxons (0-1). Seniors Jen Lazarony (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) and Kaitlyn Broderick (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) teamed up to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The duo trailed 4-1 before rattling off seven straight games for the victory.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Katelyn Richenberg (Stafford, NY/Batavia) and sophomore Ellen Meyers (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) were in control the whole time, winning 8-1. Senior Shelby Kielbasa (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) and freshman Lauren Bohman (Sayville, NY/Sayville) triumphed at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, in a back-and-forth battle.
Richenberg, Meyers and Bohman won their singles matches at No. 3, No. 4 and No.5 singles, respectively, with none of the trio surrendering more than two games. Broderick pulled out a close 7-5, 7-6(6) win at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Jessica Nolan (Stanley, NY/Marcus Whitman) won at the No. 6 flight, 6-3, 6-4.
Lazarony battled to the very end, but lost a nail-biter at No. 1 singles, losing to Alfred's Griffin Currie by the score 6-7(3), 6-7(3).
“I'm really proud of the team's performance today in extreme heat,” head coach Ben Klempka said. “Jen and Kaitlyn pulled off an impressive comeback, and Katelyn Richenberg played great tennis today. I'm really looking forward to our next match, and I know the team is too.”
The Golden Eagles hit the road on Thursday, as they travel to Rochester to face St. John Fisher at 3 pm.
