Box Score

The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team opened up the 2012-2013 season with an impressive 72-30 victory over Cazenovia College on Thursday night. Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) led the Golden Eagles with 14 points while Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) chipped in 13 points.

At Cazenovia, the Brockport offense put together a solid first half, but it was the Golden Eagle defense that kept the Wildcats in check. Brockport limited Cazenovia to just 12 first half points on 17.2 percent shooting while the Golden Eagles connected on 41 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of the game. Marshall, a first-year member of the Golden Eagles, scored 10 of her points in the first half. Brockport never led by less than 22 points in the second half as the Golden Eagles cruised to their first victory of the season.

Marshall, a transfer student from Queens College, scored the game's first four points for Brockport. The Golden Eagles scored the first seven points of the game before allowing a Cazenovia bucket. Brockport then went on a 14-0 run to pull away. Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) connected on two three-point shots in the first half while dishing out four assists to just one turnover. The senior finished the game with 11 points and seven assists.

Bree Fortney (Lorain, OH/Lorain) dominated the glass in the first stanza as the freshman grabbed seven rebounds. Forntney also added six points as Brockport went into halftime with a comfortable 36-12 lead.

Sigrist opened up the second half with a jumper on an assist from Grinnell. The sophomore connected on back-to-back jumpers five minutes into the half as Brockport built its lead to 28. Cazenovia scored eight of the game's next 11 points to cut into the deficit, but Brockport put together a run of its own. The Wildcats hit a layup at the 8:09 mark but that was the last of the scoring for Cazenovia. The Golden Eagles scored the final 14 points of the game to earn their second season-opening victory in the last three seasons.

Freshman Meg Stucko (Elba, NY/Elba) grabbed six second half rebounds and finished the game with nine boards along with six points. Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) and Erica Johnson (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) both contributed six points.

Head coach Nicole Beauregard commended the new-look Golden Eagles. "For a team with a lot of new faces" said Beauregard, "we played very well together tonight. It was a total team effort, especially on the defensive end. I'm very proud of all of our girls."

The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 42.7 percent from the floor. The Golden Eagles managed to reach that mark just twice in the 2011-2012 season. The 30 points allowed are the lowest for a Brockport team since Feb. 8, 2008 when the Golden Eagles held Morrisville to 22 points.

Brockport controlled the rebounding game with a 50-38 advantage. The Golden Eagles used a sporadic full-court defense and caused 24 turnovers on the night while committing just 14 turnovers of their own. Codi Battaglia (Webster, NY/Aquinas Institute) led Brockport with five steals.

Brockport will head to the second annual Onnie's Classic as the Golden Eagles take on Vassar College on Nov. 17 and Keuka College on Nov. 18.
