The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team scored its first victory in three seasons at the Wendy's College Classic as the Golden Eagles defeated St. John Fisher 72-62 on Tuesday night. Brockport advances to take on the University of Rochester at 8 pm Thursday night at Rochester.
Bree Fortney (Lorain, OH/Lorain) scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles. The freshman hit seven of 10 shots from the field and went five of six from the free-throw line while grabbing six rebounds. As a team, Brockport had four double-digit scorers on the night.
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) chipped in a season-high 14 points.
The win is the first at the Wendy's College Classic since Brockport scored a 58-54 victory over Nazareth on Jan. 12, 2010.
Fortney got off to a hot start for the Golden Eagles, scoring the team's first seven points. The freshman provided a presence underneath the basket on both ends of the court, limiting St. John Fisher's second-leading scorer Camaryn Buckner to just one first-half field goal. Brockport got a big spark from
Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor), who had been held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the game. The first-year member of the Golden Eagles hit a three-point shot to give Brockport a 14-7 lead. Marshall's three was part of a 12-2 run for the Golden Eagles.
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) hit a layup and a free-throw to bring Brockport's lead to 22-12. The Golden Eagles did a solid job of limiting St. John Fisher's second-chance opportunities as Fortney and Sigrist continued to control the defensive glass. The Golden Eagles hit 10 of 13 free throws in the first half, including their final five as Brockport went into halftime with a 30-25 lead.
The Cardinals scored eight of the first 10 points to open the second half and take their first lead since early in the first half. Story and Fortney provided the scoring early on in the second half for the Golden Eagles. Fortney showed her versatility on the court as the freshman nailed a three-point shot, her first of the season, at the 14:50 mark to tie the game at 39.
After a St. John Fisher layup, the Golden Eagles went on an 11-0 run, sparked by an
Erica Johnson (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) three-point shot. Brockport was able to maintain its lead down the stretch after breaking the Cardinals' full court pressure. Brockport found itself at the free-throw line often down the stretch, hitting 8-12 from the charity stripe.
Overall the Golden Eagles shot 27-41 from the free-throw line, the team's highest total of makes and attempts this season. Brockport out-rebounded the Cardinals 48-37 as Sigrist grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds. Marshall contributed 12 points and eight boards while Story grabbed seven, a season-high of her own.
Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) hit two three-point shots and six free-throws to finish with 12 points.
Rochester defeated R.I.T. 80-53 on Tuesday night to advance to the seminfinal round with Brockport. Gametime between the Golden Eagles and the YellowJackets is 8:00 pm Thursday night.
