Brockport Earns First Conference Win at Oneonta

The Golden Eagles take down the Red Dragons 53-45 on the road

Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) scored a game-high 17 points as The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team put together a late-game run to defeat Oneonta 53-45 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon. With the win, Brockport earned its first conference victory of the season.

Brockport entered the second half trailing but managed to hang with the Red Dragons for the opening minutes. After losing an early first period lead, the Golden Eagles staged a comeback down the stretch. Meg Stucko (Elba, NY/Elba) hit a jumper at the 7:24 mark to give Brockport its first lead of the second half. The Golden Eagles never relinquished the lead as the team went 8-10 from the free throw line in the final 2:37 and carry out the victory.

Byrnes, playing in just her second game of the regular season hit two three-point shots on the night and went 5-6 from the free throw line. Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) found her scoring touch against the Red Dragons, dropping in 14 points on the night while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, Brockport out-rebounded Oneonta 41-37.

Oneonta opened the game up with a 6-0 run but the Golden Eagles stormed back. Byrnes hit a layup with just over 12 minutes to play to tie the game at eight. Byrnes put Brockport up 18-14 after causing an Oneonta turnover and hitting a jumper on the other end. Following Byrne's shot, the Red Dragons put together a run of their own, scoring 11 straight points and went into halftime holding a 26-20 lead.

Both teams traded buckets to open the second half but the Golden Eagles came through with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 30. Story hit a jumper on an assist from Byrnes to tie the game at 32 with 8:13 to play and Stucko's jumper a minute later put Brockport ahead for good. Five different players scored for the Golden Eagles over the final five minutes as Brockport outscored Oneonta 16-9 over that stretch.

The win snaps a six-game losing streak to the Red Dragons. Brockport's last win over Oneonta came in the 2008 SUNYAC Tournament semifinals.

The Brockport defense kept Oneonta to just 29 percent shooting on the night, the second lowest total for an opponent this season. The Golden Eagles also forced 19 Red Dragon turnovers.

The Golden Eagles will have a month off for the holiday break but resume play on Jan. 8 against Geneseo for a home conference matchup.
