Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) led Brockport in scoring for the ninth time this season but The College at Brockport women's basketball team fell to the Buffalo State Bengals 71-54 on Saturday afternoon.
Byrnes finished the game with 13 points on the night, including 7-10 from the free throw line. Byrnes also finished with six rebounds, second only to
Rachel Csakany's (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) eight boards. Csakany also finished with nine points on the night.
Both teams posted solid defensive pressure in the early minutes of the first half. Brockport found a way to break through the Bengals full court pressure to convert for the early points. The Golden Eagles forced 10 Buffalo State turnovers in the first half on six steals. Both Byrnes and
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) finished with four points and four rebounds before intermission. Buffalo State built their largest lead of the half right before the break and headed into the locker room with a 39-25 advantage.
Brockport opened up the second half attempting to cut down on the deficit. The Golden Eagles put together a quick 7-2 run but the Bengals responded with their own 9-0 run to build a 23 point lead at 62-39. Brockport kept Buffalo State without a field goal for almost 6 minutes beginning with just under nine minutes to play. Byrnes scored seven straight points during the stretch for the Golden Eagles, but Brockport could not overcome the early deficit.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 42.2 percent from the floor, their best mark in their last 11 games this season. The Bengals took advantage of the game in the paint, outscoring Brockport 44-26 down low.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 14 against Cortland before wrapping up their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular season schedule with a home weekend series against Plattsburgh and Potsdam.
