Junior
James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henniger) gave up just one hit in six innings of work in the second game of The College at Brockport Baseball team's doubleheader against Purchase College Saturday as the Golden Eagles swept the Panthers. Brockport won the first game 7-5 and blanked Purchase 7-0 in game two.
Aaron Tilley (Troy, NY/Troy) got the start in game one for Brockport. The Panthers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning. Tilley managed to settle down over the next five innings as the senior allowed just two hits and had five strike outs. Tilley finished the game with six innings, three earned runs on four hits, six strikeouts and two walks.
The Golden Eagles scoring started in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run double by
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Three straight walks put runners on base for Brockport. With bases loaded,
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Jeff Sergott (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany). The right-handed Weakley went opposite field to bring home two runs on the double.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning. Brockport opened up the top of the seventh with a leadoff triple by Weakley.
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) singled to bring in Weakley and tie the score at four. The Golden Eagles then relied on a bit of small ball to manufacture three more runs in the innings.
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) dropped down a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an error to score Booth.
Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) scored
Tyler Carr (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) on a groundout to the right side and on the next at-bat Tracy scored on a sacrifice fly by Sergott. Purchase scored just one run in the bottom of the seventh as Brockport held on for the season-opening victory.
Weakley finished the game three for four with a double, triple, one run scored, and two runs batted in.
The Brockport offense picked up right where they left off in the second game, not taking any time to score. The Golden Eagles scored four runs in the first inning as the first seven Brockport batters reached base. Brockport used four hits, one error, a sacrifice fly, and a hit by pitch to produce the scoring. The four runs were more than enough for Brockport as the Panthers only managed one hit the entire game. Brockport tacked on one run in the third on a
Michael Moroni (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) RBI-double and two more in the seventh as
Mark Cvitan (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) hit a two-run double.
Bardenett kept the Purchase hitters fooled all day as the junior struck out 10 batters to just two walks and allowed the one hit, a fifth-inning single in six innings.
Mark Driesel (Kenty, NY/Kendall) pitched a hitless seventh to complete the shutout.
Head coach
Justin Beach credited the pitching staff of both Tilley and Bardenett. “Other than the first inning” said Beach “Our guys had a strong day on the mound. Tilley was able to settle down and pitch well. It's great to start the year with a few wins. We had some new players really step up for us today.”
The Golden Eagles travel to Mount Saint Mary College tomorrow for a single game beginning at 10:00 am.
