Brockport (9-5) scored a run in the first inning and took a 3-0 lead in the second with a two-run homer for Bunce over the left field fence. Stevens (6-6) tied the score with three runs in the third but Brockport added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the 5-3 lead. After Stevens cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the top of the seventh before the Golden Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the inning for the 7-4 lead and sophomore Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) closed out the game for his fourth save of the season.
Bunce homered in his first at-bat and drilled singled in fourth and the seventh for a three-hit day to lead the Brockport offense.
In the first inning Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and the ball ricocheted into centerfield allowing Wilson to advance to second. Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) grounded out to the right side of the infield pushing Wilson to third and a gound out by Corey Booth (Middletown., NY/Minisink Valley) was good enough to allow Wilson to score for the early 1-0 Brockport lead.
In the second inning, Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) walked to leadoff the inning and stole second to move into scoring position. Bunce followed with his home run over the left field fence to give Brockport the 3-0 lead.
Stevens Tech answered with three runs in the top of the third inning as the leadoff batter singled to start the inning and the next batter laid down a sacrifice bunt but a throwing error by starting pitcher Aaron Tilley (Troy, NY/Troy) allowed both runners to reach base safely. A wild pitch moved both runners up one base putting runners on second and third with no outs. A single scored one runner and a sacrifice fly pushed home another run. Another single pushed the third run home and eventually Brockport was able to end the inning on a runner caught stealing and a line drive out to shortstop.
Booth lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the fifth inning as Wilson trotted home from third. Wilson had singled and moved to second on an error by the left fielder to start the inning and took third with a fly out to right field before scoring on Booth's fly out.
In the sixth, Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) hit a two-out single to left field and advanced to second as the left fielder misplayed the ball on the play. Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) singled to third base but a throwing error on the throw to first base allowed Boronczyk to score from second and advanced Swayne to second.
In the seventh inning, Stevens trimmed the lead with a single and triple to start the inning before John Lowe (Kingston, NY/Kingston) retired the next three batters to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Brockport tacked on two more runs for the 7-4 advantage. Tracy walked and stole second and Booth walked to put runners on first and second. Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) doubled to left centerfield scoring Tracy from second but Booth was thrown out at the plate. Two batters later, Bunce singled to score Weakley for the 7-4 lead.
In the ninth inning, Stevens managed one final run with a two-out single followed by a double for the first run of the season off relief pitcher McCarthy before he struck out the next batter to end the game.
Weakley had two hits, a run scored and one run batted in, Wilson was 1-for-5 with two runs scored and Booth was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.
Tilley had a solid outing to earn his third win of the season with six complete innings, eight hits allowed, three runs – two earned and five strike outs. Lowe and Mark Driesel (Kent, NY/Kendall) each tossed an inning or relief and McCarthy finished the game to earn the save.
