Junior Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) scored a run in the first inning and senior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) added a run in the top of the eighth inning to lead The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Rutgers-Camden Friday afternoon at Campbell's Field in Camden, New Jersey.

Brockport (4-0) took the 2-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth before Rutgers-Camden (0-3) added a run in their half of the eighth to cut the lead in half. Brockport relief pitcher sophomore Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) came on to record the final two outs of the eighth with the bases loaded and then recorded three straight outs after a leadoff single in the ninth for his second save of the season.

In the first inning, Coleman led off the game with a single to left field on the first pitch of the game, advanced to second with a stolen base and then moved to third on a Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) single before scoring on a Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) sacrifice fly to right field.

The score remained 1-0 until the eighth inning. Booth reached on a fielding error with one out in the inning and stole second to advance into scoring position. After Bunce walked, one batter later, sophomore Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) singled to center field to score Booth from second base.

“I was not feeling very comfortable with the 2-1 lead late in the game,” said head coach Justin Beach. “We were able to get some solid pitching from (Justin) McCarthy to close out the game. Overall the pitching has been solid to start the season but we need to take advantage of the opportunities offensively to take some pressure off the pitching staff.”

James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) started on the mound for Brockport and allowed three hits over seven innings of work for his second straight start without allowing a run in 2012. He struck out four batters and walked a pair.  The win moved Bardenett to 2-0 on the season.

Weakley had two of the six Brockport hits with Bunce and Wilson picking up runs batted in.

The Golden Eagles continue their road trip to New Jersey with an 11 am game at Kean University. The game was originally scheduled for a 1 pm start but due to threatening weather the game time was moved up in an effort to get the game in Saturday.
