Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) returned to the starting lineup after missing three games with an injury and contributed three hits and also knocked in three runs to lead The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 9-6 victory over St. John Fisher College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game in Pittsford.
Brockport (11-5) scored three runs in the first and three more in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead and added single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. St. John Fisher (10-4) scored once in the third inning and added four runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-5 and added one more in the sixth.
In the top of the first inning,
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) single to lead off the game and
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) walked to put two runners on.
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) singled to load the bases and after
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Wilson from third, Coleman delivered a single up the middle to score Tracy and Booth for the early 3-0 lead.
After St, John Fisher answered with a run in the third inning with the help of two infield singles, Brockport added three more runs in the top of the fourth to extend the lead.
Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) singled to open the fourth and
Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) doubled scoring Swayne. With one out, Wilson singled to score Boronczyk and then stole second. He later scored on a throwing error by the catcher as Tracy was attempting to steal second base giving Brockport a 6-1 lead.
Coleman singled and scored in the fifth inning to make it a 7-1 Brockport lead but the Cardinals battled back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the gap. The Golden Eagles added an unearned run in the sixth and St. John Fisher added a run in the bottom of the inning for an 8-6 Brockport lead.
The Golden Eagles added one more insurance run in the eighth when Weakley doubled to lead off the inning and Coleman singled to score Weakley for the final score.
Coleman led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with three runs batted in. Wilson, Booth, Weakley,
Stephen Boronczyk and
Jamie Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) contributed two hits each to pace the Brockport offense.
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) was the starting pitcher and scattered eight hits with five runs allowed – three earned.
James Williamson (Mexico, NY/Mexico),
John Lowe (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) combined to allow just one run in relief as Williamson picks up the victory and McCarthy earns his fifth save of the season.
