The College at Brockport Baseball team pounded out 17 hits in game one and senior Mark Ciccotti (Breesport, NY/Horseheads) struck out 11 batters in the second game but the Golden Eagles lost both seven-inning games against Penn State Altoona in a doubleheader Friday to start the annual Spring Training trip to central Florida.
Brockport (4-3) lost game one by a 7-4 score and dropped the nightcap 3-2.
In game one, the Golden Eagles took an early lead with back-to-back singles by Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). After Coleman led off the game with his single, he advanced to second on a passed ball and came around to score on Weakley's single to right field.
In the third inning, Brockport extended the lead to 2-0 when Weakley hit a one-out double and advanced to third on an error from the cut-off attempt. Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) followed with a double down the left field line to score Weakley and give Brockport a 2-0 lead.
Altoona (2-8) scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning with three of the runs crossing the plate with two outs in the inning and held the lead for the rest of the game. The Lions added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and Brockport answered with two runs in the sixth to close the gap but could get no closer.
In the sixth, freshman Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) scored on a wild pitch and Booth singled to score Coleman for Brockport's two runs.
In game two, Ciccotti allowed a run after just two batters in the first inning but settled down to strike out five of the next seven batters to regain control of the game. The leadoff hitter for Altoona tripled to right centerfield to open the game and was brought in to score as the second batter of the game singled. The next three batters were all called out on strikes.
Brockport scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score. Weakley, Booth and Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) hit consecutive singles to load the bases and Weakley scored on a passed ball. In the third inning, Booth gave Brockport a 2-1 lead after a one-out single, stolen base and a balk advanced him to third base and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Tracy.
Altoona tied the game in the fifth inning with three straight singles to start the inning before Brockport was able to get out of the inning with an unconventional 5-4-2 double play as Jamie Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) fielded a ground ball and threw to second for the force out then Weakley fired a throw to the plate where Jeff Sergott (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) applied the tag to the runner attempting to score from third to complete the double play.
In the sixth inning, Altoona took the 3-2 lead with a two-out RBI double.
On the day, Booth was 6-for-7 including a 4-for-4 game in the opener. Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) added three hits in the first game while Coleman, Weakley and Tracy each collected two hits in the 17-hit attach of game one. Tracy and Weakley had one hit each in the nightcap as Brockport was limited to just four hits in the game.
