Offense Sparks Split with Plattsburgh

Sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 6-for-10 with four runs scored, two runs batted in a home run and a double to lead The College at Brockport Baseball team to a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup with Plattsburgh on Chip Cummings Field in Plattsburgh.

Weakley was one of several Golden Eagle batters with big days offensively as Brockport (17-10 Overall, 6-5 SUNYAC) slugged 31 hits and scored 19 runs in the two games. Brockport won the opener by a 10-4 score in the seven-inning contest but dropped an 11-9 decision in the nine-inning nightcap.

In the opener, Brockport scored six times in the first four inning to post a 6-0 lead before Plattsburgh (14-13, 6-7) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut into the lead. The Golden Eagles added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the final score.

Weakley was 4-for-5 with two singles, a double and a home run with three runs scored and two RBI while Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) chipped in two hits with a double and two runs scored and Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) had three hits and two RBI each.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Booth had three more hits and three RBI while Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit), Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) all had three hits apiece. Two of Wilson's hits were doubles and Coleman knock in a pair of runs for Brockport.

The Golden Eagles had a 4-0 lead with two runs each in the second and third innings before Plattsburgh battled back with five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a lead. Brockport regained the lead with another two runs in the fourth inning and the Cardinals tied the score again in the fifth with a single run.

In the seventh inning, Brockport scored a run in the top of the inning to regain the lead with a 7-6 advantage but Plattsburgh answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame for an 11-7 lead. The Golden Eagles threatened in the eighth with two more runs to cut into the lead but were unable to score again for the final.
