25 Hits Not Enough in Split with New Paltz

Freshman Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) had three hits in each game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader with New Paltz Sunday as The College at Brockport Baseball team posted a 9-5 victory in the opener but dropped an 8-7 decision in 11 innings in the nightcap as the teams split the make-up doubleheader played at SUNYIT in Utica.
 
The games were played two weeks after the originally scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to unplayable field conditions at New Paltz on both March 31 and April 1.
 
In the opener, Brockport (18-11 Overall, 7-6 SUNYAC) scored three runs in the second inning for the early 3-0 lead before New Paltz (17-14, 4-8) tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the fourth with a single runs and added to the lead with three runs in the fifth for a 7-3 advantage. The Hawks battled back with two runs in the sixth but Brockport put the game away with two runs in the seventh for the win.
 
In the second game of the doubleheader, New Paltz jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the second before Brockport cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the third. The Hawks regained a two-run advantage with a run in the bottom of the third and the game remained 4-2 until the sixth inning.
 
In the sixth, Brockport tied the game at 4-4 with two runs and took a 5-4 lead with a single run in the seventh. New Paltz answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning for the 6-5 lead. In the eighth inning, Brockport took the lead back with a pair of runs and New Paltz tied it up again at 7-7 with a run in the bottom half of the frame. The score remained tied at 7-7 until the 11th inning when the Hawks scored with two outs in the bottom of the 11th for the extra innings victory.
 
In game one, Swayne was 3-for-3 with a run scored and four runs batted in while Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit), Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) each contributed two hits to the Brockport attack. DeGregory, Boronczyk, Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Kyle Tracey (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) each scored two runs and each had an RBI for the Golden Eagles.
 
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) allowed eight hits but just three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings for the victory and Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) finished the game for his seventh save of the season.
 
In the nightcap, Swayne and DeGregory were each 3-for-4 at the plate while Tracey was 3-for-5. Swayne and Tracey each scored two runs for Brockport. The Golden Eagles pounded out 12 hits as the team recorded at least 10 hits for the seventh consecutive game.
