Junior Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) pitched a complete game shutout in his first career start as The College at Brockport Baseball team defeated the Fredonia State Blue Devils 5-0 in game one on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles completed the doubleheader sweep with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap. Brockport took all three games of the regular season series.

Coleman, who pitched eight and one-third innings of relief last year, went the distance in his first career start. The junior allowed just three hits and walked three. In eight appearances last season, Coleman struck out 10 batters. Against Fredonia alone, he struck out seven.  After five games this past weekend and a full schedule this week, head coach Justin Beach opted to go with Coleman for the conference matchup. “Jake was the freshest arm we had” said Beach. “The coaching staff thought he gave us the best chance to win.”

Coleman helped his own cause with the game's first run in the top of the second. Coleman walked with two outs for Brockport's first baserunner. Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) then singled and Coleman advanced to third. With Jamie Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) up to bat, DeGregory was picked off at first base, but stayed in a rundown long enough for Coleman to cross the plate.

Brockport put together a three-run fourth to pull away. An error and three straight walks put Brockport up 2-0. Boronczyk then came up to bat and singled to center field to score two more runs. Boronczyk produced another run for Brockport as he scored on a double to right center field by Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) in the top of the sixth. With the double, Swayne extended his hitting streak to seven games.

All five of Brockport's runs came with two outs in their three scoring innings. The Golden Eagles managed just five hits in the game, but took advantage of three Blue Devil errors and four walks. Along with Coleman's strong pitching performance, the junior drew two walks and scored two runs. Coleman allowed one hit in the first, fourth and fifth innings to earn Brockport's first shutout since Feb. 25 against Purchase.

Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) drove in the first run of game two with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first to score Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit). Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) put Brockport up 2-0 with a solo homerun, his third of the year, in the fourth inning. DeGregory and Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) led off with back-to-back doubles to start the fifth. Both runners crossed the plate as part of a five-run inning. Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) drove in a run with a double and later scored on a two-run double by Booth. Brockport matched their hit total from game one in the fifth inning alone with five.

Coleman added another run in the eighth after getting caught in a rundown. Coleman managed to evade the fielders and score after forcing a throwing error. Leading 8-4 in the top of the ninth, Brockport added two more runs in the ninth, including an RBI single by Booth, his fourth RBI of the game.

James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) earned the win on the mound to improve to 7-2 on the year. The junior tossed six innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run while striking out seven. The Golden Eagles used five pitchers overall, including John Lowe (Kingston, NY/Kingston) who got two strikeouts to end the eighth and left runners on second and third.

The Golden Eagles outhit Fredonia State 14-11. Wilson went 2-4 with three runs scored in the game. Along with the four RBI, Booth had two hits and one run scored. Stephen Boronczyk and Kevin Gerken (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) each had multi-hit games.

Brockport improves to 20-11 overall and 9-6 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) to stay in second place. The Golden Eagles' next five games are all out of conference, including a home matchup against RIT tomorrow, April 18 at 4:00 pm.
