Senior Kevin Gerken (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) drove in two runs on a fourth inning single to break open game two as The College at Brockport Baseball team completed the doubleheader nonconference sweep against the Medaille Mavericks on a cold Sunday afternoon at the Clark V. White Complex. The Golden Eagles took game one 6-0 and game two 5-3. Brockport improves its' record to 23-11 overall and have won 10 of their last 12.

Brockport used a dominating complete game pitching performance by James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) in game one and used a five run fourth inning to take game two. Gerken finished game two going 2-3 with the two RBI and also scored a run in the Brockport fifth. Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) had a hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, tied for the longest this season by a Golden Eagle.

Brockport did all the damage they needed in the first inning of game one, scoring four runs off of Medaille starting pitcher Zach Machmer. Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) tripled to lead off the game and scored on the next at-bat, a single by Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage). Tracy scored on an infield single by Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton). Both Coleman and Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) later scored after Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) put the ball in play and reached on a throwing error by the second baseman.

Brockport collected four hits over the next four innings, but did not plate a run until the sixth. Boronczyk singled to start the inning and Tyler Carr (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) entered as a pinch-runner. Another throwing error by the second baseman on a ball put in play by Wilson allowed Carr to score. Booth extended his hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single to center, scoring Wilson to make the score 6-0. Booth also extended his team-leading RBI count to 32.

Bardenett controlled the Medaille batters from the start of the day. The junior did not allow a base runner until the fouth inning. Through the first five innings, Bardenett struck out four, induced four groundouts and had four infield pop-ups out of a total of 17 batters faced. Bardenett's final line concluded with seven innings pitched, zero runs allowed, three hits, five strikeouts, and zero walks. Bardenett's strikeout-to-walk ratio is now 3.8/1 and holds a 2.63 earned run average on the season and improved his record to 8-2.

Medaille struck first in game two, scoring a run on an infield single off of Brockport starting pitcher Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian). Renwick allowed just two outs over the first four innings of work. The lefty used a brilliant pickoff move to nab two Medaille base runners, one in the first and one in the fourth.

Brockport brought the game back into their possession in the fourth inning. After a leadoff single by Booth and a double by Weakley, Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) both walked to tie the game at one. Jamie Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) grounded out but Weakley was able to score on the play. Gerken, making just his second start of the season, came up to bat with two runners in scoring position and drove them both in with a single to left center. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed Gerken to score and put Brockport up 5-1.

Renwick got in some trouble in the top half of the fifth inning. The junior was relieved by James Williamson (Mexico, NY/Mexico) who induced a bases-loaded doubleplay on his first batter and struck out the next to get out of a jam.

Williamson pitched a perfect sixth inning and Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) tossed a perfect seventh for his eighth save of the year. Renwick received the win after four innings of work to improve to 3-1.

Thanks to a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss by Oswego State to Plattsburgh earlier in the day, Brockport clinched a playoff berth for the 11th consecutive season. Brockport has one more three-game conference series left on April 27 and 28 against Oneonta, who currently holds the fourth and final playoff position with a 7-8 record.
