Defensive miscues by The College at Brockport Baseball Team allowed St. John Fisher to come from behind to post a 3-2 victory Wednesday in a non-conference game played at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
The game, between two of the top teams in the New York Region, was a key non-conference contest for both squads. Brockport (23-12) scored single runs in both the second and third innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead but St. John Fisher (23-8) rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game and scored the go ahead run in the seventh before holding on for the victory.
In the second inning,
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) singled to start the inning and advanced to second with a stolen base.
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) singled to right field advancing Weakley to third. After
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) walked to load the bases,
Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to give Brockport the early 1-0 lead.
In the third inning,
Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) walked to open the inning, advanced to second on a ground out and moved to third on an infield single by
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) which loaded the bases after
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) drew a walk. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Coleman drew a bases loaded walk for push home the second run of the contest for the Golden Eagles.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinal answered back with two runs as the first run scored on a throwing error by the Brockport catcher in an attempt to throw out Ben Ward as he stole third base. A ground out allowed the second run to score to even the score at 2-2.
In the seventh inning, the first batter of the inning for the Cardinal reached base with an error, moved to second with a sacrifice bunt, took third with an infield single and scored after a stolen base play at second allowed the runner to score from third on the throw.
