James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) tossed eight innings to pick up his ninth win of the season and fellow junior
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) recorded both runs batted in to lead The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Oneonta Friday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
The same two teams will complete the SUNYAC regular season with a doubleheader at Noon Saturday.
Bardenett scattered six hits and struck out two batters allowing just the one run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to earn his ninth win of the season tying the school record for wins in a season. Ben Kimball had nine victories in 2004 when he helped the Golden Eagles advance to the Division III College World Series. Bardenett improves to 9-2 on the season with a 2.45 earned run average.
Against Oneonta, Weakley grounded out to third base in the first inning with runners on the corners allowing
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) to score from third and then ripped a double down the right field line with two outs in the sixth inning to score
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) from second for the game-winning run.
After Brockport (24-12 Overall, 10-6 SUNYAC) took the early lead, Bardenett kept the Red Dragons (14-19, 7-9) off the board until the sixth inning when Oneonta tied the score after consecutive singles to start the inning and a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Weakley's double in the bottom of the sixth regained the lead for the Golden Eagles.
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) had two hits to lead Brockport while Tracy,
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) each added a hit.
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) worked the ninth inning for Brockport to pick up his 9th save of the season. The nine saves is tied for the best mark in the country at the Division III level this season. His nine saves come with the fewest number of appearances among the five pitchers with nine saves at the top of the national standings.
