Senior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) had three hits in the opener and extended his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games with a hit in the nightcap for The College at Brockport Baseball team but the Golden Eagles dropped both ends of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader to Oneonta Saturday afternoon at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
Oneonta (16-19 Overall 9-9 SUNYAC) came from behind to force extra innings and won the opener 7-5 and scored seven runs in the final two innings for a 9-2 victory in the nightcap. The wins earned the Red Dragons the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will face Brockport (24-12, 10-8) in the first round of the tournament Friday afternoon in Cortland. The Golden Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
On Saturday, Brockport took an early lead in the opener with four runs in the first two innings including three in the bottom of the first. The teams traded runs in the next three innings and Brockport held a 5-2 lead entering the sixth inning of the scheduled seven-inning game.
Oneonta rallied to score three times in the sixth to knot the score at 5-5 and added two runs in the top of the eighth inning for the come-from behind victory.
In the first inning Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) singled and Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) walked before Booth stepped to the plate and singled to score Wilson from second. Two batters later, Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) reached base on catcher's interference to load the bases and Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) followed with a run scoring single and Booth later scored as a result of a fielding error for the 3-0 Brockport lead.
Booth singled with two outs in the second inning, moved to second with a stolen base and scored another unearned run as a result of another Red Dragon error for the 4-0 advantage.
In the Brockport fourth, Tracy singled and stole second before moving to third on a Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) single and scored as Coleman singled with the next at bat.
In the nightcap, the Brockport offense was limited to four hits as Booth, Weakley, Coleman and Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) each had a hit for the Golden Eagles. Booth's hit extended a hitting streak to 10 games.
Oneonta scored the first two runs of the game with single runs in the second and fifth innings. Brockport scored twice in the seventh to tie the score but the Red Dragons scored a run in the eighth for a 3-2 lead and added six runs in the ninth for the final score.
In the seventh, Booth and Weakley opened the inning with singles and each moved up a base with a balk before Coleman lifted a sacrifice fly to score Booth from third for the first run of the game for the Golden Eagles. Gianni followed with a single to score Weakley.
