The College at Brockport Baseball team swept the Oswego State Lakers on Saturday afternoon thanks to solid hitting performances by
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) and
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit). The Golden Eagles used extra innings in the scheduled seven-inning game in the first contest to drop Oswego 5-2 and in the nine-inning game two, the Golden Eagles defeated Oswego 8-3. Brockport's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) record improves to 4-4 and are now 15-9 overall.
Booth finished game one going 4-5, including a single to centerfield to drive in extra innings to secure the victory. Wilson and
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) both had two hits as the 1-2-3 hitters combined to go 8-14 in the game with three runs scored and five RBIs.
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) got his first victory of the year after pitching 4.1 innings of relief for start
Mark Ciccotti (Breesport, NY/Horseheads).
The Lakers scored a run in each of the first two innings. The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard with an RBI single by Booth to score Weakley. Brockport added another run in the fifth after Wilson scored
Jeff Sergott (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) on a sacrifice fly.
The game remained tied at two until Brockport took control in the ninth. After the first two batters flew out to centerfield,
Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) singled to spark the offense with two outs. The trio of Wilson, Weakley, and Booth all singled in consecutive order. Weakley's single scored
Tyler Carr (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) who was pinch running for Peake and Booth's single to center scored Weakley and Wilson. McCarthy shut down the Lakers in the bottom of the ninth, getting a fly out, a pop up to the infield and a strike out to end the game.
The Golden Eagles struck first in game two as
Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) singled to right field in the second inning to drive in Sergott and
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton). Both teams put up a run in the fourth inning as Swayne got his second hit of the day and another RBI, driving in Sergott again.
Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), who collected two hits on the day, scored in the sixth on an RBI single by Coleman.
Wilson had his own four hit game in the nightcap. The sophomore singled up the middle to leadoff the top of the seventh and later scored after Booth singled to left. Booth later scored in the inning after
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) doubled down the left field line.
Brockport added on two more runs in the eighth. Wilson hit for another single in the inning which drove in Coleman and Carr for Brockport's final scoring of the day. Oswego attempted its' own comeback in the bottom of the eighth after scoring two runs off of relief pitcher
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian).
Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) entered the game in the ninth inning and didn't allow a run. Stankiewicz has yet to allow a run this year in nine appearances.
James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) received the win for game two. The junior went seven innings allowing just one earned run and struck out seven while allowing only one walk. Along with Wilson's four hit game, Booth, Boronczyk, Coleman, and Swayne all had multi-hit games for the Golden Eagles.
