Box Score
The College at Brockport Baseball team fell to No. 5 nationally ranked Cortland in a thrilling State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship game, 4-3. The Golden Eagles were competing in their fifth consecutive SUNYAC Championship game, all against Cortland.
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) gave up just two hits in the first seven innings as he made his first appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament.
Both teams played scoreless ball for the first seven frames until Brockport took a commanding three run lead in the sixth.
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) provided his second big hit in as many days with a one-out single to left center to score two. Gianni was named to the All-Tournament team. Cortland put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth and held off Brockport in the ninth to claim the title.
Brockport threatened early as
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) singled up the middle and stole second to start the game. Brockport had two runners on in the inning but couldn't cross the plate. The Golden Eagles put a runner on in the second and two in the third yet remained scoreless until the sixth.
With Renwick working with a one-hitter,
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) both had hard-hit singles to start the sixth. After a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base, Gianni stepped in and drove a pitch to left center to score two. On the previous day against Oneonta, Gianni provided a three-run double, also to left center. Coleman got his second hit of the day with a two-out double to bring in Gianni to lift the Golden Eagles and give them a 3-0 lead.
Renwick carried that momentum with him into the next two innings, sitting down all three batters in the sixth and induced a double play in the seventh. Cortland's big inning came in the eighth after the Red Dragons plated four runs. With two outs and one on, Michael LaTempa singled to score two and Brian Barry, the tournament's Most Valuable Player doubled to score two more and take the lead.
Jamie Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) singled to lead off the ninth. With two outs,
Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) drove one off the pitcher's glove and reached base for a single to put runners at first and second, but the Golden Eagles were unable to bring around a final run.
Renwick dominated the Red Dragons all day long as the junior induced 13 ground ball outs on the day, including seven to Coleman. The seven assists on the day are a career-high for Coleman. Renwick finished the game with seven and two-thirds innings pitched, four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Coleman, Booth, Weakley, Gianni, and Boronczyk each had two hits on the day.
Along with Gianni, Booth, Bunce, and
James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) were named to the All-Tournament team. Booth went 6-14 in the tournament with three RBI and two runs scored while Bunce was 5-14 with three RBI, including a walk-off hit to beat Oneonta on the first day of the tournament. Bardenett started the first game against Oneonta. While he did not receive a decision, the junior went eight and one-third innings and struck out four batters. Gianni played in just two full games but led Brockport with five RBI and also had two runs scored.
Brockport reached the championship game after defeating Oneonta 4-3 on day one. After a loss to Cortland on day two, the Golden Eagles rebounded to eliminate Oneonta 8-5. The Golden Eagles reached their fifth straight SUNYAC Title game, winning the crown in 2010. Cortland has won 14 of the last 16 SUNYAC titles, with Brockport being the only other team to claim the championship.
