Early Run Sinks Brockport in SUNYAC Play

Sophomore guard Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) scored 15 points on five three-pointers for The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team but the Golden Eagles fell to Oneonta 68-51 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-8 in conference play.

Byrnes has now scored at least 15 points in her last four games as the sophomore is averaging 17.3 points per game over that stretch. Byrnes sank five shots from beyond the arc on six attempts in the game, including 3-4 in the first half. Bree Fortney (Lorain, OH/Lorain) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points.

Brockport jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game after a three-point shot from Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and a layup from Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) but the Red Dragons opened the game up with a 20-0 run of their own. The Golden Eagles battled to stay in contention with Oneonta, but the Red Dragons maintained a double-digit lead most of the first half and led 36-24 at halftime.

Byrnes sank a three-point shot at the 11:35 mark of the second half to bring Brockport to within seven, 45-38. Oneonta answered with a 10-0 run and built its lead to as large as 22 as the Red Dragons stole a victory from Brockport at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

The Golden Eagles finished with eight three-point shots on the night, a season-high for the team. Brockport also grabbed 16 rebounds on the offensive glass in a close rebounding game as the Red Dragons outrebounded Brockport 40-39.

Brockport managed to shoot just 5-13 from the free throw line, going 4-12 in the second half alone. The Red Dragons hit 48.3 percent of their shots compared to just 30.2 percent for Brockport.

The Golden Eagles continue SUNYAC play on their home court tomorrow with a 2:00 pm matchup against New Paltz.
