Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) powered The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 7-5 victory over No. 7 Kean on Sunday. Brockport scored five runs in the top of the ninth to come from behind in the season-opener.
Brockport, taking on the Cougars after Saturday's game was postponed to Sunday, trailed 5-2 entering the ninth inning. After
Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) walked,
Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) pinch ran and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gianni connected on a double down the left field line to score Swayne.
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) then scored Gianni on a groundout.
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) singled with a bunt and stole second before
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drew a two-out walk. Bunce provided the big hit with a double to left center to score two more runs.
Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) singled to left to round out the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland), a preseason All-American, retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to pick up his first save of the year.
Ethan Selby (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) retired the final batter in the eighth inning to earn his first career Brockport win.
Bunce finished the day scoring two runs after going 2-5 at the plate, both hits going for doubles.
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with one run scored on the day.
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) started the game on the mound, going 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs while walking two and striking out two.
Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) threw 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just two hits before Selby came in to shut the Cougars down in the eighth. McCarthy struck out the final batter in the ninth to secure the upset win.
Wilson provided the games first run, scoring on a walk in the second inning. Kean responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cougars went up 4-1 in the fifth. Bunce scored on a wild pitch in the sixth but Kean answered right back in the bottom to go up 5-2. The Golden Eagles saved their biggest inning for the ninth to pick up their first victory of the year.
