Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) pitched five solid innings and added two hits while fellow senior
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 2-for-3 with two doubles for The College at Brockport Baseball team but it was not enough as RIT scored three times in the third inning and held on for a 3-2 victory Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Monroe Community College.
RIT (5-2) opened the scoring in the third inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error and stole second. After Coleman struck out his fifth batter of the game, he walked a batter and the next Tiger hitter connected with a double to the left field wall scoring one runner and leaving runners at second and third. The next batter hit an infield single and the next batter grounded out scoring the third run of the inning for a 3-0 RIT lead.
The score remained 3-0 until the ninth inning when Brockport (4-1) mounted a late rally.
After
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) grounded out to start the inning,
Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) reached base on a throwing error to start the rally. Coleman followed with a single through the right side of the infield before
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) grounded out to advance the runners to second and third with two outs in the inning.
Freshman
Colin Grande (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled to centerfield scoring Hurlimann and Coleman and later advanced to second base into scoring position with a wild pitch.
Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a short grounder between third base and shortstop and the RIT third baseman charged in on the play and threw out Burghardt on a close play at first to end the game.
Brockport finished with seven hits including three doubles while RIT scored three runs on four hits. Coleman and Weakley had two hits each to pace the offense.
Relief pitchers
Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Tyler Clifford (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) combined for three scoreless innings after Coleman went five complete innings allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out seven batters.
