Senior Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had three hits in the first game and one in hit in the night cap leading The College at Brockport Baseball team to a pair of thrilling extra-inning victories over Clarkson University Thursday afternoon at the Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven, FL. The Golden Eagles came from behind to post a 7-5 win in the opener in 11 innings of the scheduled seven-inning game and then posted a 4-3 win in eight innings in game two.
Brockport (6-1) rallied for a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to tie game one at 5-5 and force extra innings before scoring twice in the 11th for the win. In game two, the Golden Eagles rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored the game-winning run on a balk with runners on first and third base for the 4-3 win.
In game one, Brockport took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning as Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) grounded out to force home the first run and the next two were unearned runs with the help of Clarkson (0-2) errors.
The Golden Knights scored once in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead with four unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-3 lead.
The score stayed 5-3 until the sixth inning when Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) singled home Bunce to cut the lead to 5-4. In the seventh inning, Coleman singled to centerfield to score Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) tying the game and sending it to extra innings.
Closer Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) came on to pitch the seventh inning and then stayed in the game keeping Clarkson off the board allowing the Golden Eagles to score twice in the 11th for the 7-5 lead. In the 11th, Bunce singled to right centerfield scoring Kyle Tracy (Plainview NY/Bethpage) and Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) for the lead.
In game two, Clarkson scored once in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Brockport answered when Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) singled down the right field line and a throwing error allowed Tracy to score all the way from first on the play. Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) followed with a single to score Wilson tying the game at 2-2.
In the fifth, Clarkson scored for a 3-2 lead. In the seventh Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) singled between third and shortstop before Nick Pilotti (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was inserted as a pinch runner. Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) came to bat and belted a line drive double to left centerfield scoring Pilotti to tie the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, Brockport rallied to put runners on first and third with Tracy on third and Wilson on first before the Clarkson pitcher was called for a balk forcing home the winning run.
