Big Inning Takes Down Baseball in Florida

Golden Eagles fall 11-3 to Rensselaer due to nine-run eighth inning

Junior Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) had three hits and a stolen base for The College at Brockport Baseball team but only one other Golden Eagle had more than a hit as Brockport dropped an 11-3 decision to Rensselaer Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida.

Brockport (7-2) scored the first run of the game in the first inning while Rensselaer (7-2) was held scoreless until the sixth inning when they tied the score. Another RPI run in the seventh gave the Engineers a 2-1 lead before RPI rallied for nine runs in the eighth inning to break the game open. Brockport answered with a pair of runs on a two-out triple by Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) in the ninth for the final score.

In the first inning, Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) walked and moved to third on a single to right field by Tracy and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) for the first run of the game.

Starting pitcher Matthew Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) had control of the game through five innings before allowing unearned runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Reliever Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) finished the seventh and started the eighth before the firth three batters each recorded hits. RPI continued the rally with five more hits, a walk, a hit batsman and two fielding errors before the inning ended with nine more runs on the scoreboard and an 11-1 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Bunce reached base after being hit with the first pitch of the inning. Later, Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a two-out single to right centerfield and Gianni followed with a triple to right field scoring both Burghardt and Bunce for the final two runs of the game.

Burghardt finished with a pair of hits and Gianni had two of the three runs batted in for the Golden Eagles.
