Freshman Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) for The College at Brockport Baseball team to tie the score at 3-3 and force extra innings but Oswego rallied for six runs in the 10th to take a 9-6 victory in at State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday in the first of a three-game series at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was delayed several times before the game was finally suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning with Brockport trailing 7-5 with one out and the bases loaded. The game will be resumed Saturday at 10 am prior to the start of the third game of the series at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
Brockport (9-4) took an early lead with single runs in the first and second innings. Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) singled to lead off the bottom of the first and Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) was next and reached base with a hit-by-pitch before Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) set down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) drove a deep fly ball to bring home Coleman on the sacrifice fly and give Brockport a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a Burghardt ground out and scored when Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) singled to right field and Brockport had a 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth inning when Oswego (8-3) put a run on the board with an unearned run after an error to start the inning. In the seventh, Oswego took a 3-2 lead with three singles, a walk and a hit batter in the inning.
After Brockport scored in the bottom of the ninth, Oswego erupted for six runs in the top of the 10th on the strength of two home runs including a grand slam.
