A late second half rally from The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team fell short on Wednesday afternoon as the Golden Eagles dropped a nonconference match-up to the St. John Fisher Cardinals 13-10.
Liz Algie (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) tallied three goals for the Golden Eagles as Brockport falls to 5-2 on the year.
The Cardinals built a 7-3 first half lead and led by as many as seven in the second half until Brockport staged a late-game comeback. The Golden Eagles rattled off four straight goals with under 10 minutes to play to cut the deficit to four, but the Cardinals controlled a late draw control and sealed the road victory.
Emily Zartman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua),
Katie Sullivan (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), and
Ciara McKeon (Westhampton, NY/Westhampton Beach) all scored two goals apiece for the Golden Eagles while
Erin Featherstone (Tully, NY/Tully) picked up her fifth score of the year.
Brockport, playing in its first home game of the year, got into trouble early as the Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of play. Featherstone and Sullivan scored two quick goals for the Golden Eagles before St. John Fisher answered with three scores of its own.
Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) found Zartman for the final goal of the first half at the 1:22 mark.
After nearly eight minutes of scoreless play to open the second half, McKeon brought Brockport to within three with her 11th goal of the year. The Cardinals scored five of the next six goals to build a comfortable lead.
With 9:30 to play, Zartman and Brown teamed up again to spark a Brockport rally. Algie scored on an assist from Featherstone just over a minute later. Sullivan scored with under five to play but the Golden Eagles failed to score over the next 3:46 until Algie found the back of the net with 48 seconds left on the clock. McKeon picked up her second score with three seconds left to finish off the scoring for Brockport.
Brown finished the game with four assists, giving her 12 over her last two games.
Courtney Szczesniak (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) picked up a team-high four ground balls while causing three turnovers.
The Golden Eagles outshot their counterparts 25-21 on the day, including a 19-11 advantage in the second half.
Remle Harr (Farmington, NY/Fairport) stopped two shots and picked up just her second loss of the year for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles open up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a home game against Oneonta on March 30 at 1:00 pm
