The College at Brockport baseball team rallied late to tie the game but fell in extra innings to New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks defeated Brockport 8-4 in 12 innings. The Golden Eagles fall to 10-8 and 1-5 in conference play.

New Paltz slowly built a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the frame thanks to a two-run single from Zach Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) to tie the game at four. Strong pitching from both sides played crucial role over the next three innings until New Paltz got to reliever Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) in the top half of the 12th.

Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) sparked the rally in the eighth with an RBI single. The junior collected three hits in five at bats on the day. Wilson is second on the team this year with a .359 batting average. Freshman Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango), Brockport's leading hitter recorded his third three-hit game of the year.

New Paltz struck first with a run in the top of the second off of Brockport starter Matt Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs). The Golden Eagles responded right away with a run in the bottom of the inning. Burghardt singled through the right side to score Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton).

Coleman retired 10 of his next 11 batters as the game remained tied. With one out in the top of the sixth, the Hawks took the lead with a run-scoring groundout. New Paltz tacked on one more run in the inning and took a three-run lead with a score in the eighth.

Brockport managed just one hit after the second inning as the Golden Eagles trailed entering the bottom of the eighth. Burghardt singled up the middle to start the inning. After a Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) single, Wilson drove in Burghardt. With two outs and a 1-2 count, Lander drove a pitch to center field to tie the score at four.

McCarthy entered the game in the ninth and did not allow a run over the next three innings. The Golden Eagles failed to get a hit in extra innings as the Hawks scored four in the 12th to take the weekend sweep.

Brockport will continue its SUNYAC schedule with a road game at Fredonia on April 2.
