James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) became the winningest pitcher in program history as The College at Brockport baseball team defeated the visiting Plattsburgh Cardinals 10-1 on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles fell to the Cardinals 3-2 in game two to split Saturday's doubleheader. Brockport now sits at 4-8 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
Bardenett tossed seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits to pick up his 19th career victory, moving past Jason Shannon for sole possession of first place on the career wins list. The senior struck out eight batters on the day, putting him just three strikeouts away from first place on the all-time strikeouts list at Brockport. Ben Kimball currently holds the record with 165 career strikeouts.
Brockport struck first in the second inning to build an early lead on Plattsburgh.
Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) singled to centerfield to score
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) later doubled to score
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-0. After the Cardinals cut the deficit in half,
Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) doubled down the right field line in the third to score
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) and
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton).
Senior
Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) extended the lead in the fourth with a single through the left side to score Gianni and put Brockport up 5-1.After loading the bases, Bunce delivered the biggest blow of the day as the senior blasted a grand slam to right centerfield, scoring Boronczyk, Tracy, and
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit). Weakley picked up his second double of the day in the eighth inning to provide the final scoring, driving in
Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) who reached on a pinch-hit double.
Bunce, Weakley, and Burghardt all had two-hit games for the Golden Eagles while Gianni and Tracy each scored twice. Seniors
Mark Driesel (Kent, NY/Kendall) and
Kyle Montross (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) combined for two innings of relief on the mound, giving up just one hit and striking out one batter each.
Brockport once again took the initial lead in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third without registering a hit. With the bases loaded, Bunce was hit by a pitch and Weakley scored the game's first run. On the next at bat, Coleman scored after Hurlimann earned a walk, giving the Golden Eagles the two run lead.
The Cardinals got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game. The Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but left the bases loaded to end the frame.
Brockport starter
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) retired the next six batters as the game went into extra innings. Renwick allowed a one out single in the top of the eighth. After a sacrifice bunt, Renwick was relieved with two outs. Plattsburgh came through with a two out single off of Brockport reliever
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) to take the 3-2 lead. The Golden Eagles failed to score a run in the bottom of the inning as Plattsburgh salvaged the split.
Renwick allowed just three hits on the day and struck out five batters while issuing two walks.
The two teams will complete the three-game series with a nine inning matchup tomorrow afternoon, set to begin at 12:00 pm at the Clark V. Whited Complex.
