Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) recorded five hits and moved into fifth place on the all-time list for career hits and fellow senior
James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) struck out six batters to become the all-time strikeouts leader as The College at Brockport Baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games on the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
Fredonia (16-8 Overall, 7-5 SUNYAC) came from behind to win the opener 6-2 but Brockport (14-13, 5-10) rebounded for an 11-3 win in the nightcap.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning behind a strong pitching performance from Bardenett in the opener. The senior scattered nine hits but did not allow a run over the first six innings striking out six batters to increase his career total to 169 strikeouts passing Ben Kimball as the all-time strikeout leader at Brockport. Kimball finished his career with 165 strikeouts in 2004.
In the seventh inning, Fredonia rallied for six runs on three hits and one error and held on for the victory in the seven-inning game one of the doubleheader.
Weakley led the Brockport offense with a perfect 3-for-3 game at the plate with a run scored and one run batted in.
Brockport scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. Freshman
Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) started the inning with a single and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by
Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton).
Weakley followed with a single down the left field line scoring Burghardt for the first run of the game.
After
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) walked and
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) singled to load the bases,
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field giving Brockport a 2-0 lead.
In game two, Brockport scored twice in the first inning, added four runs in the fourth and added two more runs in each the sixth and seventh innings for a commanding 10-0 lead. Fredonia scored three times in the eighth and the Golden Eagles added the final run in the bottom of the inning for the final score.
Weakley was 2-for-5 in the nightcap while Gianni led the team with three hits on a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with two runs and a run batted in. Coleman, Hurlimann, Burghardt and
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) added two hits each to the strong offensive effort of the Brockport offense.
Starter
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) kept the Blue Devils in check with seven innings of shutout pitching, allowing just three hits and striking out six for his team-leading fourth win of the season.
