The College at Brockport baseball team hung on for a 4-3 victory over St. John Fisher on Sunday afternoon as
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) improved to 6-2 on the year with the win. The Golden Eagles improved their season record to 20-15 overall.
Brockport got on the board with a run in the fourth inning and built their lead to 4-0 with runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth. Renwick tossed 8.2 innings on the mound before handing the ball over to
Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) for the final out of the game. Stankiewicz earned his first save of the year.
Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) each picked up two hits on the day.
Nick Bunce delivered an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to nine games. The senior has driven in 14 runs over that stretch to bring his team-leading total to 43 on the year. Renwick scattered nine hits while striking out six batters.
The Golden Eagles struck first with a run in the fourth inning after
Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) reached base on an infield single, scoring Zach Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) from third. Bunce put Brockport up 2-0 with his eighth double of the year, scoring
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt).
Gianni scored his second run of the game in the seventh after
Kyle Tracy (Bethpage, NY/Plainview) reached base on a fielding error. Coleman singled in the eighth to drive in
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit), giving Brockport a 4-0 advantage.
The Cardinals put a dent in Brockport's lead with a run in the eighth and scored two more in the ninth. Stankiewicz came to the mound and gave up a single to second base on his first batter but Peake made a heads up play to throw out the tying run at home to end the game.
The Golden Eagles will host Rochester on April 30 at the 4:00 pm at the Clark V. Whited complex for a nonconference matchup.
