Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) sparked a seventh inning rally for The College at Brockport baseball team but the Golden Eagles fell late to the Fredonia Blue Devils, dropping the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest 4-3. Brockport drops to 10-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
After six shutout innings for the Brockport offense, the Golden Eagles rallied in the seventh inning to score two runs on a single from Burghardt to tie the game at two. Brockport tacked on one run in the eighth to take the lead but Fredonia scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. The Golden Eagles were sat down in order to close out the game.
James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) pitched 7.1 innings on the mound, scattering five hits and allowing three earned runs. The senior struck out six batters, giving him 155 for his career and tying him with Rob Maxwell for second most in school history.
In a game that was rescheduled from Tuesday afternoon, the Golden Eagles threatened in the top half of the first inning as
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) led off with a single but was left stranded on third base. Following a walk and a stolen base in the third inning, Coleman was stranded in scoring position once again. The Blue Devils took advantage of the missed opportunities and scored a run in the third and fourth innings to build a 2-0 lead.
Brockport failed to put a runner on base over the next three innings until
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) ended the drought with a one-out single to left field in the seventh.
Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) singled on the next at-bat and advanced to second on an error from the second baseman. With two runners in scoring position, Burghardt singled to tie the game.
Bardenett sat down the Blue Devils in order in the seventh to preserve the tie. Coleman led off the eighth with his second single of the game and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage). Coleman later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) as Brockport took the lead. Bunce leads the team with 18 RBI on the year.
The lead was short lived as Fredonia put five of its next six batters on base in the eighth inning to tie the game at three. With two outs, Fredonia scored on a bases loaded walk to steal the victory from the Golden Eagles.
Brockport continues its SUNYAC schedule with a three-game road series with Cortland this weekend.
