Fredonia Slips Past Brockport In Final Minute

Senior Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) scored 18 points, but The College at Brockport women's basketball team fell in the final minutes 65-62 on Saturday afternoon at Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup.

Marshall opened up scoring for the Golden Eagles with a three pointer. Ahead early, the Golden Eagles took advantage of the first five missed shots by the Blue Devils.

Brockport remained in the lead until 10:59, as Fredonia got into a better shooting rhythm.

The game stayed close for the remainder of the half.

Faith Welch (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) gave the lead back to Brockport with a layup at 4:25. The Golden Eagles were able to hang onto the lead and head into halftime up 32-30.

The Blue Devils started off the second half with a 6-0 run, putting Fredonia ahead of Brockport 36-32 in the first two minutes of play.

The second half saw many ties and lead changes. Heading into the final five minutes of play ahead, Brockport was not able to hold onto their lead and at 3:31, Fredonia went ahead.

In the final minute of play, Marshall hit a huge layup to give Brockport a one point lead. Unfortunately, Fredonia was clutch from the free throw line; draining four shots as the clock ran down to secure the win.  

As a team, Brockport finished the game shooting 39.7% from the field, 28.6% from long range and 50% from the free throw line.

Marshall led the offense with 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Welch, Kaitlin Hammersley (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) and Bree Fortney (Lorain, OH/Lorain) each added 11 points.  Hammersley recorded her first double-double of the season, also pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds. Hannah Rehbaum (Cheektowaga, NY/Sacred Heart) recorded a season-high seven steals.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday for a 6pm SUNYAC matchup on the road at 6 pm.
