Senior Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner on and The College at Brockport Baseball team down a run. Two pitches into the at bat, Hurlimann blasted a two-run home run as the Golden Eagles walked off with a 6-5 victory. Clarkson had won the first game of the twin bill, 7-1, Sunday afternoon at Lake Region High School in Eagle Lake, Florida as part of the annual Spring Training trip to Florida for Brockport.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Brockport (5-2) fell behind early as Clarkson (2-3) scored twice in the top of the first inning. The Golden Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead.
Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a double to the left centerfield gap with the bases loaded as all three runners scored on the hit. Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) started the rally with a one-out single and Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) followed with an infield single to third base. Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) reached on a fielder's choice play and stole second base before Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) walked to load the bases. Burghardt was next and doubled to clear the bases.
Clarkson regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and took a 5-3 lead with another run in the top of the sixth inning. Brockport answered with a single run in the bottom half of the inning.
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) walked to start the sixth and Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) singled through the left side to put two runners on. Kenney followed with a sacrifice bunt and Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) lifted a pinch hit sacrifice fly to center field to draw the Golden Eagles to within a run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gianni drew a walk with a full count and moved to second with a sacrifice bunt by Burghardt. Hurlimann followed with his game-ending home run for the win. It was the second homer of the season for the senior who had two home runs all of last year and continued a six-game hit streak.
Hurlimann was 1-for-2 in the opener and 1-for-3 in the nightcap. Burghardt had a pinch hit double in the first game and was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the second. Kenney was 2-for-2 with a run scored in the second game.
Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) earned the win with two innings of relief after Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) started and battled through five innings allowing two earned runs and struck out six batters.
