Sophomore Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) blasted a two-run homer in the ninth inning to seal a victory for The College at Brockport Baseball team in game one of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader Saturday in New Paltz.

Brockport (11-4 Overall, 3-2 SUNYAC) won the opener 8-1 and New Paltz (10-12, 2-4) rebounded to post a 5-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

In game one, senior starter Matthew Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) allowed just five hits and one unearned run in eight innings striking out three batters to improve to 2-0. Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) retired the final three batters in the bottom of the ninth to finish the game.

Offensively, Brockport opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning. Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) hit a two-out double to right centerfield and was awarded third due to an obstruction call on the play. Mike Giani (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) followed with another double to score Barbetto for the first run of the game. After a wild pitch allowed Gianni to scamper to third, Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) reached base when the second baseman dropped an infield fly which also allowed Gianni to score.

In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles added a third run. Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) doubled to left centerfield with one out and moved to third on a balk. After Brendon Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) grounded to third as the third baseman made a diving stop, Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) singled to score Peake for the 3-0 Brockport lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, New Paltz scored its only run of the game on a pair of singles and an infield error.

Brockport responded in the top of the ninth inning with four runs to seal the victory. Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) reached on a fielding error and Burghardt followed with a deep home run to left field off reliever Tyler Mitts. After two hit batsmen and a walk, Mitts was taken out of the game but the next New Paltz pitcher hit Hamula with a pitch forcing home Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) for the 7-1 Brockport lead.

Peake was thrown out at home on the following play but Brockport capped the scoring when Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) reached on an error to score Swayne.

In game two, Brockport was limited to just three hits with Hurlimann collecting two and Swayne the other. In game one, Burghardt led the way with three hits and two runs batted in while Gianni and Barbetto added two hits each. Hamula was credited with a pair of RBI for Brockport.
