Gymnastics Defends its ECAC Championship

Golden Eagles finish strong to win second straight title

Brockport wins second consecutive ECAC Championship

Junior Stephanie Schuler (Purcellville, VA/Hickory) won the vault championship and Amanda Carney (Walpole, MA/Walpole) took first place overall on floor exercise leading The College at Brockport to a come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Brockport defended the title with a team score of 188.000. Cortland was second (186.775) and Ursinus was third (185.875). The top three teams earned team spots at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships March 21-22 in Ithaca. Springfield was fourth with 185.275, Ithaca (179.550) was fifth and Rhode Island College (173.725) finished sixth.

Brockport got off to a rocky start on balance beam with a 45.175. Freshman Jennifer Sklenar (Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney) led the Golden Eagles with a 9.475 and senior Samantha Spaid (Green, OH/Green) was second on the team with a 9.0.

The Golden Eagles recovered well scoring a 48.025 on floor exercise. Carney had the highest score of the day with her 9.70 routine and each Brockport gymnast had at least a 9.5 in the event. The Golden Eagles captured the top four spots of the day on floor with Carney, Sklenar (9.675), Lexi King (Glendale, AZ/Mountain Ridge) with a 9.6 and Olivia Sylvestro (Palm City, FL/Martin County) with a 9.55. Lily Jagodzinski (Tonawanda, NY/Williamsville North) was tied for eighth overall with her 9.5 on floor.

Brockport scored another 48.100 points on vault as the Golden Eagles took four of the top five spots overall. Schuler had a 9.675 to take top honors while Sylvestro added a 9.65 and King scored 9.625. Carney had a 9.60 to finish fifth overall and freshman Marla Thomas (Piedmont, SC/Wren) was tied for seventh overall with a 9.55.

The Golden Eagles finished the meet on the uneven bars with four of the top 10 scores for the day and all five gymnasts finishing in the top 12.

Schuler was second overall with a 9.6 while Maddie O'Braitis (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) was tied for sixth at 9.35. Seniors Heidi Beckerich (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard) scored 9.275 and Casey Addis (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had a 9.25 while Sylvestro rounded out the scoring with a 9.25.
