Box Score 2 Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) and Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) combined for five hits in the doubleheader as The College at Brockport Baseball team split the two games with Plattsburgh winning the first 4-3 and falling in the nightcap 6-0 to complete the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) three-game series with two wins.
The Golden Eagles (13-10 Overall, 5-7 SUNYAC) scored all four of its runs in the opener in the top of the fourth inning. Plattsburgh (9-16, 4-7) responded with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth but could not score in the seventh as the Golden Eagles held on for the victory.
In the nightcap, Brockport was limited to five hits and the Cardinals scored in five different innings to post the 6-0 shutout win.
In the opener, Swayne was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, a stolen base and a run scored. Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) added a double and Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the fourth inning, Burghardt opened the inning with a double down the left field line and Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) singled to left to put runners on the corners. Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) reached base on an error that allowed Burghardt to score from third for the first run of the game.
Colin Grande (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position as Hurlimann moved to third and Hamula advanced to second.
With two outs, Swayne singled through the left side of the infield scoring both runners and giving Brockport a 3-0 lead. Swayne stole second and scored when Barbetto singled to right centerfield for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Plattsburgh put two runners on with a double and a hit by pitch before a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Zach Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) who started the game was relieved by Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw). The next Cardinal batter hit a line drive to left field that was caught by Grande who then threw home to get the runner trying to score from third for the double play.
The Cardinals did score twice in the fifth inning and added one more in the sixth to trim the Brockport lead to 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Plattsburgh tried to start a rally but with one out the Cardinals singled but was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double and Jake Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) struck out the final batter to record his second save of the year.
In game two, Gianni had three of Brockport's five hits including a double but the Golden Eagles were unable to score. Hurlimann and Barbetto each added a hit as Hurlimann doubled and Barbetto chipped in a stolen base.
