Box Score 2 The College at Brockport bats came alive in the final inning of both ends of a doubleheader leading to a 4-2 win in the opener and a 14-7 victory in the nightcap Thursday afternoon in a rescheduled State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against Fredonia. The games, originally scheduled to be played Tuesday in Fredonia were moved to Brockport and played at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
Brockport (16-10 Overall, 8-7 SUNYAC) scored four times in the top of the seventh inning of the opener that was scheduled for seven innings to come away with the 4-2 win and then scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 7-7 tie in the nightcap to post the 14-7 win. All together, the Golden Eagles pounded out 11 runs on seven hits in the final inning of the two games.
In the opener, Fredonia (8-13, 3-6) scored a run in the second inning to take an early lead but surrendered the four runs in the seventh before adding one in the bottom of the seventh inning for the final score.
In the seventh, Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) and Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) drew a one out walks to start the rally. After a pitching change, Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) loaded the bases with another walk and Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) followed with a two-run single to give Brockport the 2-1 lead.
After a second out was recorded, John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) doubled to score Gianni and Burghardt for the 4-1 advantage.
Five different Golden Eagles had one hit each in the game. Tyler Clifford (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) started on the mound allowing one run on three hits in five innings. Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) picked up the win in relief and Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) earned the save recording the final three outs with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, Brockport opened the scoring with three runs in the second and another in the third for a 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils battled back with single runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the lead in half at 4-2 but Brockport tacked on two more in the top of the sixth to regain the four-run advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fredonia rallied for four runs to tie the score at 6-6 and each team scored a run in the eighth for a 7-7 tie heading into the ninth inning.
With one out in the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Colin Grande (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was hit by pitch and Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) singled before Barbetto was hit by pitch to load the bases. Craig was the next batter and sent the first pitch he saw to the fence over the left fielder's head for a two-run double and Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) followed with a double to the fence in left centerfield to score two more runs.
With two outs, Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) singled to score Kenney. After a pitching change, Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) reached on a fielding error and Gianni singled through the left side of the infield to score the two runners giving Brockport the commanding 14-7 lead.
Kenney was 4-for-6 in the game with three runs scored and three runs batted in while Hurlimann contributed three hits including a solo home run and was hit by pitch twice, scored three times and had two RBI. Hamula also had three hits and two runs scored. Swayne, Barbetto, Burghardt and Gianni all had two hits each as Brockport finished with 19 hits in the game.
Matthew Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) started and pitched into the sixth inning while Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) and Jake Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) provided middle inning relief. Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) allowed just a single hit in the final two innings to earn the victory.
