Box Score

Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) doubled in the second inning and Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) hit a bases loaded double in the seventh inning to bring The College at Brockport Baseball team to within a run at 4-3 but Cortland answered with three runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to an 8-3 victory Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game played on Wallace Field in Cortland.

The first of a three-game SUNYAC series was scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Brockport but was moved to Cortland due to field conditions. The series ending doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday at 12 pm in Cortland.

Cortland (17-4 Overall, 6-0 SUNYAC) scored twice in the first inning and added one more in the second inning for the early 3-0 lead. Brockport (11-6, 3-4) got one run back in the third inning. After the Red Dragons extended the lead to 4-1 with another run in the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Cortland answered with three runs in the top of the eighth on a three-run homer for a 7-3 lead and made it 8-3 with a final run in the top of the ninth.

In the first, Cortland scored twice after two outs had been recorded in the inning with a single and a double followed by another single.

The Red Dragons had two more hits and a run in the second inning to take the early 3-0 lead.

Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) started the third inning with a single and Hamula followed with a single to place runners on first and second. Both runners advanced on a balk. Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) reached on a fielding error that allowed Peake to score but Hamula was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.

In the sixth, Cortland extended the lead with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brockport rallied for a couple runs to close the gap. Hurlimann started the inning with a walk and John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) followed with a single. Brendon Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) walked to load the bases and two batters later, Hamula doubled down the right field line to score Hurlimann and Craig to make the score 4-3.

Cortland answered immediately with three runs in the top of the next inning thanks to a three-run home run giving Cortland the 7-3 lead.

Brockport threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning but a double play ended the inning before a run could score.

The Red Dragons added an insurance run in the ninth and held on for the win as Brockport put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth before the final out was recorded.

Hamula was the only Golden Eagle with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Matthew Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) was tagged with his first loss of the year going three innings. Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) went four innings in relief allowing just two hits before Jeffrey Prouse (Eden, ONT/Glendale) and Jake Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) teamed to throw the final two innings.
