Box Score 2 Colin Grande (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled home two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to close the gap to 6-4 but Cortland held on for the 6-4 victory to sweep Brockport in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday in Cortland. The Red Dragons won the opener 8-0.
In game two, after Cortland scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, Brockport answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) singled to start the inning and Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) singled to shallow right field to put two runners on. With one out, Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) blooped a single down the left field line to load the bases before John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) grounded out to first base allowing a run to score cutting the lead in half.
Brockport tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) scored from third on a balk.
Cortland responded in a big way with three runs in the top of the eighth with four hits in the inning including a leadoff double.
After the Red Dragons scored one more in the top of the ninth, Brockport put together a rally in the bottom of the inning to make things very interesting.
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) opened the inning with a bunt single that came to a rest 15 feet from the plate and next to the third base line. Barbetto singled to centerfield and Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) walked to load the bases and Grande singled to left centerfield to score two runs and Tracy laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run into scoring position at second base.
Hamula walked to load the bases again and Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) struck out on a very questionable call from the home plate umpire for the second out of the inning. Hurlimann was next and grounded a ball between the first and second basemen but the first baseman made the stop and tossed to the pitcher covering first for the final out of the game.
Tracy, Hamula, Hurlimann and Grande had two hits each and Grande had two runs batted in.
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) started and pitched seven and a third innings allowing just three runs and striking out three.
In the first game, things were going well until the third inning with the Red Dragons batted through the order scoring seven runs and taking an 8-0 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Brockport was limited to five hits in the game with Gianni, Burghardt, Craig, Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Barbetto producing one hit each.
