Box Score Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango), Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) had two hits each as The College at Brockport Baseball team posted a 4-1 victory Saturday morning in an elimination game at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament in Cortland. The second game of the day for the Golden Eagles was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning with Brockport leading Oswego 3-2 due to darkness and rain. That game is set to resume Sunday morning at 10:30 am.
Against Oneonta in the first game, Brockport broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with three runs. The Golden Eagles added another run in the seventh and Oneonta completed the scoring in the eighth with its only run of the game.
In the fifth, Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) started the inning reaching on a hit by pitch and Wilson followed with a bunt attempt for a sacrifice but beat the throw and was awarded a single to put runners on first and second base.
Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position and Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Peake for the first run of the game.
With two outs, Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) singled to right centerfield scoring Wilson from second and Burghardt followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) singled through the right side to score another runner giving Brockport a 3-0 lead.
In the seventh inning, Brockport scored again. Barbetto singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tracy grounded out pushing Barbetto to third. With two outs, Burghardt singled to left centerfield to score Barbetto for the fourth run of the game.
Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) started and scattered seven hits over seven innings allowing a runner in scoring position in each of the first seven frames but did not allow a run and struck out a pair of batters.
Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) finished off the game as Westling picked up his fourth save of the year.
