Box Score Senior Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and junior Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) each knocked in runs in the sixth inning to lead The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 3-1 victory over St. John Fisher Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the Clark V. Whited Complex in Brockport.
Brockport (25-14) score the first run of the game in the fifth inning and then tacked on two more in the sixth for a 3-0 lead. St. John Fisher (27-11) scored its only run of the game in the seventh inning and as five Brockport pitchers shut down the Cardinal bats.
Senior Matthew Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) started and threw four scoreless innings before fellow senior Jake Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) came in to throw two innings of relief allowing the only run on two hits. Junior Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) and Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) combined for two more shutout innings before Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) came on for the final inning to pick up the save.
In the fifth inning, Kenney and Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) each drew two out walks before Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) singled to left field scoring Kenney for the first run of the game.
In the next inning, Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) was hit by pitch to start the inning and with one out, John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled to put runners on first and second before Colin Grande (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) singled through the right side to load the bases.
After a St. John Fisher pitching change, Hamula stepped to the plate and delivered a single through the left side of the infield to chase home Burghardt for the 2-0 Brockport lead. With one out and the bases still loaded, Kenney drove in a run with a ground out to shortstop to force home Craig making the score 3-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Cardinals scored a run and loaded the bases with one out before struck out one batter and induced a fly ball out to center field to end the inning and the scoring threat.
McCarthy closed out the game striking out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the ninth.
Tracy had two of Brockport's five hits on the day while Craig, Grande and Hamula each had one. Hamula, Kenney and Tracy had the three Brockport RBIs.
