Box Score 2 Senior Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) was 2-for-2 in game one and then smashed a three-run home run in game two leading The College at Brockport Baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Dickinson College Thursday afternoon as the Golden Eagles opened the 2015 Spring Training trip to Florida with a pair of wins.
Brockport (4-1) won the opener 12-5 scoring six runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth and then had to come from behind in the second game as Burghardt delivered a three-run homer to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning. Brockport went on to post a 5-4 win.
In the opener, the Brockport bats came alive for 17 hits and batted around the order scoring six times in the second inning. Both teams scored in the first inning with the Golden Eagles scoring on a failed double-play attempt as Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) beat out the throw at first allowing Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) to score giving Brockport the 1-0 lead.
After Dickinson (1-7) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, Brockport rallied for seven hits and two sacrifice plays to push six runs across the plate to take a comfortable 7-1 lead.
The Red Devils scored once in the bottom of the third but Brockport put together another big inning in the fourth with five more runs. Burghardt had a run scoring double as Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) scored and Davis followed with a single to score Burghardt. Later in the inning, Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) singled with the bases loaded plating all three runners and Brockport had a 12-2 lead.
That was more than enough run support for starter Tyler Clifford (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) as the junior scattered eight hits in 4 1/3 innings and struck out six batters to earn the win. Seve Kowalski (Franklin Springs, NY/Clinton) and Kevin Harman (Penfield, NY/Penfield) finished the game on the mound allowing just a single run.
In game two, both teams scored in the third inning for a 1-1 tie before Dickinson rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning and took a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Eli Carrera (Rochester, NY/Franklin) started the inning with a walk and Barbetto connected on one of his four hits in the game to put runners at first and second. With one out, Burghardt stepped up and delivered a home run over the left field fence to knot the game at 4-4.
Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) reached base on an error and Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew) doubled to score Geisel with the go-ahead run.
Adam Pratt (Batavia, NY/Batavia) started and had a solid outing allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and seven strike outs. At one point, the junior stuck out five consecutive batters. Derick Fero (Lyons, NY/Lyons) and Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) finished the game with Lander picking up the save.
Barbetto was 4-for-4 at the plate and Davis finished 2-for-3.
