Box Score Junior Brett Sanders (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) went 3-for-4 and scored the only run of the game for The College at Brockport Baseball team as the Golden Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to Ohio Wesleyan Friday afternoon at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Florida as part of the annual Spring Training trip to Florida.
Ohio Wesleyan (4-4) scored to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning and Brockport (4-2) tied the game in the sixth but the Bishops hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead and held on for the win a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth.
Brockport's biggest threat came in the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no outs as the first three runners reached base. Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) opened the inning with a double and Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew) singled to put runners on the corners. Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was hit by pitch to load the bases but the Golden Eagles had the next three batters retired and failed to score in the inning.
The following inning, Brockport threatened again as Sanders singled to third with a bunt base hit and Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) doubled to right center field to put runners on second and third with no outs. Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) singled to right center field to score Sanders and tie the game.
With one out, Geisel hit a ball to short right field and the Ohio Wesleyan outfielder dove but could not come up with the catch. The ball looked as though it might have been caught so Burghardt retreated to third base and could not score. After Martin was hit by pitch to load the bases, a double play ended the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the eighth with a one-out solo home run to left field and then held on in the ninth for the victory.
Sanders had a team-leading three hits while Geisel added a pair of hits.
Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) had a solid outing allowing one run on six hits and striking out three batters.
