Box Score Junior Tyler Clifford (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) started and pitched six solid innings and senior Nick Pontari (Troy, NY/Troy) threw the final three shutout innings leading The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 3-0 victory over the University of Rochester Tuesday afternoon at Rochester.
Clifford scattered four hits and struck out three batters in the first six innings and Pontari surrendered a pair of hits and struck out four batters to earn the save as the Golden Eagles (7-6) won the shutout victory.
Brockport scored twice in the third inning and then added an insurance run in the sixth.
In the third, Luke Gilbert (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led off with a double down the left field line and took third when Greg Ruddy (Troy, NY/Troy) grounded out to the right side of the infield. Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) followed with an infield hit to shortstop allowing Gilbert to score the first run of the game.
With two outs, Josh Martin (Depew, NY/Depew) lifted a single to right field chasing Barbetto to third base. Martin took a large lead off first and during a pickoff attempt, got into a run down and Barbetto raced home from third to score before Martin was tagged out to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Chris Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) doubled down the left field line to start the inning and then took third when Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) fouled out down the right field line. After Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) was hit by pitch to put runners on the corners, Lou Mastellone (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) lifted a fly ball to centerfield deep enough for Davis to tag and score for the sacrifice fly and run batted in.
Clifford threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth and then Pontari came on in the seventh to strike out two of the first three batters he faced. He finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth including another two strike outs.
Five different Golden Eagles had one hit each with Barbetto, Davis and Gilbert scoring each of the Brockport runs.
